CERTIFICATION STANDARDS & CORE PLUS DEVELOPMENT GUIDE
ENGINEERING   LEVEL III

Type of Assignment  Representative Activities
Functional Engineer   Leads and/or manages, or provides technical oversight of engineering activities in a functional specialty (i.e., reliability and maintainability, systems safety, materials, avionics, structures, propulsion, chemical/biological, human systems interfaces, weapons, Computer Engineer/Scientist, etc.) relating to the design, development, fabrication, installation, modification, sustainment, and/or analysis of systems or systems components.
  Ensures appropriate systems engineering technical and technical management processes and tools are properly applied to facilitate engineering activities for a functional specialty in IPT environments.
  Performs contract management support/oversight in the areas of Quality, Manufacturing, Software, Contractor Engineering System Oversight and Pricing support.
General Engineer   Leads and/or manages, or provides technical oversight of engineering design, development, and sustainment activities for systems or systems components.
  Ensures appropriate systems engineering technical and technical management processes and tools are properly applied during design, development, and sustainment activities.
  Performs contract management support/oversight in the areas of Quality, Manufacturing, Software, Contractor Engineering System Oversight and Pricing support.
Research Engineer or Scientist   Leads and/or manages science and technology research and engineering activities supporting acquisition programs, projects, or activities.
   Ensures appropriate systems engineering technical and technical management processes and tools are properly applied during science and technology research and engineering activities.
 
Core Certification Standards (required for DAWIA certification)
 Acquisition Training None
 Functional Training   The virtual or "V" version of a course noted by the "V" after the course number in the course ID is acceptable in lieu of the (R) version of a course.

 Education Baccalaureate or graduate degree in a technical or scientific field such as engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, operations research, engineering management, or computer science
 Experience   Four years of technical experience in ENG or S&TM position.
  Similar experience gained from other government positions or industry is acceptable as long as it meets the above standard.

Education

 Four (4) years of technical experience (in addition to core certification experience)

1 The Core Certification Standards section lists the training and/or education and experience REQUIRED for certification at this level for this career field within 24 months of assignment.
2 An "(R)" following a course title indicates the course is delivered as resident-based instruction.
5 When preparing your IDP, you and your supervisor should consider the training, education, and experience listed in the Core Plus Development Guide at this and the lower level(s) if not already completed.
21 A virtual instructor-led version of a course is available, the course number is noted by the “V” after the course ID. The “V” course is acceptable in lieu of the (R) version of the course.
